Description:
Mediterranean Village is another painting composed of past memories and future dreams. As a child my family and I would visit my Grandparents in the South of France - a place called Bruniquel just outside of Toulouse. This has always been where I've felt most safe, most at home.
The solo adventures in to the local forests, illuminated with summer sunshine and alive with the sounds of native flora and fauna felt achingly freeing.
We would picnic by the translucent rivers, eat croissants for breakfast on the terrace in the morning sun, and cosy up under blankets under the evening canvas of stars.
When I moved to the South of France in my early twenties I reconnected with this freedom I'd felt as a child, and fell in love with the Languedoc-Rousillion region too. Memories of laughter, music, late-night conversations, early morning coffees at sunrise and the magical scents of French bakeries and restaurants forever live on in all of these memories.
Yet, losing that life to a medication injury was devastating. The chance to rebuild some kind of life there again one day would be a powerful step in reclaiming that freedom.
I plan to revisit this place as part of the film—not only as a step in my own healing journey (and because it’s where I was first prescribed the medication that caused my injury), but also because this region faces one of the highest rates of prescribed benzodiazepine harm in the world, making it a critical focus for raising awareness.
